Seasonal Tips Checking that your gun is ready for your first day. Does my gun need a service? Follow these simple checks to find out. Last year it amazed me how many people were going to their first day's shooting only to find that their gun that they hadn't used since the January before didn't work on the first shot. There is nothing more frustrating than having your first pheasant flying high above you and the only sound you hear when you pull the trigger is 'CLICK'. Firstly, check to see if the gun is loose. By gently shaking the gun, when closed and without the fore end on, you shouldn't feel any movement. If there is movement and you can see light between the barrels and action it is highly likely that the gun may need a re-joint. If you are suffering from occasional missfires it's probably due to either weak main springs or the strikers may need replacing. The best way to see if your strikers need replacing is to look at the face of the action and check if the tips of the strikers are pitted. By having your gun stripped and cleaned once a year you will eliminate the above from happening. Problems will be spotted and rectified before they ruin the first day's shooting. This is a simple operation that doesn't take a long time to complete, and furthermore, it will extend the life of your gun.
